Peppermint is best known for its effects on the digestive system. It increases the flow of digestive juices and bile, and helps relax the gut muscles. It has long been used as a digestive aid to treat indigestion, bloating, gas, mild stomach discomfort, colic, cramps, nausea and motion sickness. It soothes irritated bowel and helps with diarrhea and spastic colon.
Diluted peppermint tincture can be used topically for minor skin irritations such as itching, redness, insect bites and stings, poison oak and poison ivy. Because of its menthol content, it produces a cooling sensation when used topically which can alleviate mild pain and muscle tension. Suggested dilution rate for topical use is 1 parts tincture to 2 parts water.
Peppermint tincture also promotes oral hygiene when used as a mouthwash by adding a few drops to a glass of water.
