Usnea (also known as old man's beard) is a common lichen that grows on trees all over the world. It is most known for its beneficial effects on the respiratory system. Usnea is an antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral. Its antibiotic properties specifically target the respiratory and urinary systems. It is also a topical antiseptic and can help with wound healing, skin inflammation and skin infections.
Colds and flu
Urinary tract infections
Candida albicans (yeast infections)
The usnea used to make this tincture was harvested by me from either fallen branches or directly off the ground. Harvesting usnea after a day of heavy wind is the most ethical method, as it is a slow growing lichen and should not be disturbed if it is happy and healthy. This is an alcohol extraction tincture made with grain alcohol and contains approximately 50% alcohol.
Suggested oral dose is 1-3 dropperfuls as needed. Suggested dilution for topical use is 2 parts water and 1 part tincture.
